How to beat procrastination in 5 simple steps

Procrastination is putting off what you should be doing now. It is a behavior that can have negative consequences on our productivity, our well-being and our self-esteem. But why do we procrastinate? And how to fix it?

Procrastination can have many causes, such as fear of failure, lack of motivation, distraction or perfectionism. To overcome it, we must first identify the reason that pushes us to postpone our tasks and then apply appropriate strategies. Here are five simple steps to beat procrastination:

1. Set clear and achievable goals. It’s easier to get down to work when you know what you want to accomplish and how to get there. It is therefore necessary to set SMART objectives: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. For example, instead of saying “I want to write a book”, you can say “I want to write 500 words a day for a month”.
2. Plan your time and your priorities. It is important to organize yourself so as not to be overwhelmed by emergencies or distractions. We must therefore establish a schedule that takes into account our constraints, our desires and our pace. We can also use the Eisenhower matrix to rank our tasks according to their importance and urgency.
3. Reward and congratulate yourself. It is essential to motivate yourself by giving yourself rewards each time you achieve a goal or complete a task. It could be something simple, like a coffee break, a call to a friend, or an episode of their favorite TV show. It is also necessary to congratulate oneself for its efforts and its progress, and not to focus on its errors or its shortcomings.
4. To be accompanied or supported. Sometimes it’s hard to beat procrastination on your own. It can be helpful to get help from someone you trust, such as a friend, colleague or coach. This person can encourage us, remind us of our goals, give us advice or hold us accountable. We can also join a group or community that shares our interests or our challenges.
5. Get treatment if needed. Procrastination can be a symptom of a deeper problem, such as stress, anxiety, depression, or attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD). If this is the case, do not hesitate to consult a mental health professional who can offer us appropriate treatment.

Procrastination is not inevitable. By following these five simple steps, you can learn to manage your time and tasks effectively and rediscover the pleasure of doing what you love.
